A First Look into Sections and Modeling

Today we had a critique of our new sections and models. I also pinned up my plans, which had changed a lot. They brought to light many new questions. Further studies were done in the library to understand the building. As of now, it would seem that I have a complete understanding. Also, four videos were found showing a digital model on Sketchup that someone made.

My next step going forward with the project is to make new sets of drawings, in higher quality and of a better accuracy than the previous ones. Also, a booklet will be done by the end of the week, showcasing my work.

Initial Look at Maison Errazuriz

Much information regarding the design and overall parti of my building was discovered in class today. A trip was taken to the library to find book sources to supplement some initial online research that was done. The original plans given left out certain elements of the building so my goal today was to fill in the blanks with supplemental written and drawn information.

The next version of my plans will be a hybrid of various sets of original plans. Sections will also be drawn, and a preliminary model will soon be made in order to visualize spaces such as the double height space more completely.

Here is my understanding of the design thus far:

Maison Errazuriz was designed in the early 30's by Le Corbusier for Josefina Alvear, the wife of a Chilean ambassador to Argentina. The project is unbuilt. However, it was designed to be in Chile, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. The building was meant to be on a steep slope. One version has a stone base to compensate for the terrain change. The other version does not compensate for the slope. One architect essentially copied the design and built it in Japan.

Features:
*Maison Errazuriz has two floors
*The building has a butterfly roof
*The largest space with the masonry flooring that is located on floor one is for community spaces
*There are two bedrooms as well as two bathrooms located on the first floor as well
*The first floor has a classroom but so far I'm unsure of the location of this room
*There is no staircase, but instead a large ramp leading upstairs
*There is a double height space
*Upstairs is a master bed/bath, it is a loft space
*The piloti featured are interior, and are made of tree trunks that have been stripped
*The interior has exposed wooden ceiling joists made of stripped wooden logs
*Maison Errazuriz features walls of varying thicknesses
*There is a curved wall in the master bath around the toilet
*Some of the windows are quite large
*There is a basement with no plan
*There is an attic underneath the highest part of the roof
